Abstract:

This report covers the worldwide markets for high-brightness LEDs and we have endeavored to discuss all technologies and applications that fall under that heading including the emerging category of ultra-brightness LEDs.

It does not attempt to cover the LED market as a whole, except peripherally. The market for standard LEDs continues to grow, of course, but has different opportunities, growth prospects and business characteristics than the HB-LED market. Similar comments could be madeabout the organic LED (OLED) market, except that while the standard LED is a mature product,

OLEDs are just emerging. Of course, the three types of LED are not entirely independent products.

HB-LEDs may take away some of the market for LEDs in indicator lamps in time, but for now HBLEDs are way too expensive to do so. Ultimately, HB-LEDs and OLEDs may compete with one another in the lighting market, but for now OLEDs are a long way from being able to do so. Where HB-LEDs and OLEDs already compete is in the display market, but they do not do so directly. Rather, one of the areas of market potential for the HB-LED market is for backlighting for displays, while OLED displays do not need backlighting. Thus, to the extent that OLED displays succeed it will be at the expense of the HB-LED market.

The report presents a complete description of the HB-LED industry covering all points in the value chain-consumer, the manufacturer as well as the OEM. We also give an insight on the technological and commercial aspect of the market. In particular, this report aims to:

  • Provide strategic guidance to players based upon market data and commercial and technological trends
  • Analyze various applications in terms of potential for future growth and investment
  • Identify requirements of the customer, distinguishing needs from wants
  • Present an analysis of the issues and concerns faced by the industry
  • Provide a detailed eight-year forecast of the various types of LEDs and applications of HBLEDs, in terms of units as well as revenue.

The analysis presented in this report is primarily based upon opinions of experts in the industry, which have been obtained through detailed telephone and personal interviews. Interviews conducted by NanoMarkets researchers for this report cover a range of top researchers, major manufacturers, heads of humanitarian organizations, and OEMs.
