Abstract:
Although consumers often link online shopping to identity theft, that perception is skewed because most instances of identity theft do not occur via e-commerce transactions. E-commerce vendors deploy various security mechanisms to protect consumer information, which make it difficult for hackers to break in. Hackers seldom focus on stealing identification from isolated individuals, in any event. They typically hack into databases, swiping numerous identities and personal information. Most attacks hit internal databases that house employee and customer information, and the most frequent attackers are current or former employees, who know where to find the information and have the access codes to retrieve it.
