Abstract:
China's demand for paints and coatings has grown at a fast pace in the past decade. In the next five years, both production and demand will continue to grow. This new study examines China's economic trends, investment environment, industry development, supply and demand, industry capacity, industry structure, marketing channels and major industry participants. Historical data (1996, 2001 and 2006) and long-term forecasts through 2011 and 2016 are presented. Major producers in China are profiled.
This report examines China's macroeconomic trends, investment environment, paints and coatings industry structure and capacity, production and demand, enduse market consumption trends, distribution channels and principal industry participants. Long-term forecasts for major paints and coatings production and demand are included. Key producers are profiled. Top Chinese paints and coatings producers are listed in the producer directory section.
Most primary and secondary research was done in China in order to access up-to-date government regulations, market information and industry data.
Data was collected from the Chinese government publications, Chinese language newspapers and magazines, Chinese chemical industry associations including Chinese plastic industry associations, local governments' chemical industry bureaus, plastic industry publications, and our in-house databases.
Interviews were conducted with Chinese industry experts, university professors, and paints and coatings producers in China.
Historical data include 1996, 2001 and 2006. Long-term development trends are projected to the years 2011 and 2016. Economic models and quantitative methods are applied in this report to project market demand and industry trends. Metric system is used and values are presented in either Yuan (RMB, current price) and/or US dollars. Exchange rate for 2006 is based on the annual average rate (7.9Yuan per US dollar). The word "demand" is used interchangeably with "consumption". Totals may not add due to rounding.
China has experienced over two decades of high economic growth, which has been stimulated by the consecutive increases of industrial output, consumer consumption and capital investment. China's GDP has been growing at 9.8% per annum. National industry output has been advancing at 15% annually and will continue to sustain a strong growth into the next decade. The fast-growing middle class is creating an enormous consumer society. As the fastest-growing economy in the world, the emerging market has attracted the attention of investors and corporations around the world for the last two decades.
To deepen the reform of state-owned enterprises is a long-term task and needs great efforts. The reform of state-owned economy has witnessed rapid changes in both economic and social aspects. The introduction of foreign advanced technology and capitals will continue to be favored by the Chinese government and business community. New ways will be adopted to utilize foreign investment, including mergers, acquisition, and investment funds and securities investment. China will continue to improve its investment environment in the areas of legal system, intellectual property protection, foreign trade and investment regulation, infrastructure and financial system. China is the second largest foreign investment recipient after the United States in the world today. Given its vast market, the country provides tremendous opportunities for investment and trade both for the present and future.
China started developing its paints and coatings industry in the early fifties. In the past decade, the industry has enjoyed rapid development and strong growth. In recent years, most of the paints and coatings producers strive to change the organization structures to suit for the market economy requirement and make adequate preparation for the increasing international trade. With proceeding of the reform, the total paints and coatings output reached 2.785 million metric tons in 2004.
The Chinese government gave a top priority to the development of synthetic resin paints and coatings. Polyurethane, epoxy, amino and acrylic resin paints and coatings will offer the best growth opportunities. The consumption of solvent-based paint will continue to decline. Demand for water-borne, powder, high solid and other high-grade paints and coatings will remain strong though the next century. Paints and coatings consumption in industrial sector will continue to remain the largest end-use market. However, the booming construction and automobile markets offer the best growth opportunities for architectural paints and automotive coatings. Given its vast demand, China represents an immense potential market for paints and coatings.
Despite of the significant progresses made by the paints and coatings industry in the last decade, the industry faces many obstacles, which are hindering industry development. Skyrocketing costs and short supply of raw materials have created a situation that many producers cannot operate in full capacity. In recent years, many small township enterprises have entered the paints and coatings market. The overcapacity of low-grade paints and coatings has also caused fierce competition for market shares and raw materials. The percentage of high grade paints and coatings output is relatively low and cannot satisfy the demand. Some large producers equipped with advanced, imported technology are unable to provide products of the same quality as their foreign counterparts. The industry lacks of standards and sufficient investment in research and development. However, the obstacles will be overcome, as the industry gets mature. Through the next decade, the industry will continue to consolidate. Producers with superior technology and high quality products will survive in this increasingly competitive market.
China's demand for paints and coatings will increase by 10.4% annually to 4.84 million metric tons by the year 2009. China's total paints and coatings capacities are 3.4 million metric tons annually. Paints and coatings output reached 2.79 million metric tons in 2004. It is forecast that China will increase its paints and coatings output to 4.47 million metric tons by the year 2009, growing at 10.4% per annum. China will continue to remain a net importer of high grade and specialty paints and coatings to meet the growing domestic demand. In 2004, China imported 289,200 metric tons of paints and coatings. Imports will increase to 483,700 metric tons by 2009. In the last decade, foreign investment in the Chinese paints and coatings industry has surged and will continue to grow through the next decades.
