Abstract:
China's demand for architectural paints has grown at a fast pace in the past decade. In the next five years, both production and demand will continue to grow. This new study examines China's economic trends, investment environment, industry development, supply and demand, industry capacity, industry structure, marketing channels and major industry participants. Historical data (1990, 1995 and 2000) and long-term forecasts through 2005 and 2010 are presented. Major producers in China are profiled.
The first goal of this market report is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Chinese architectural paint industry. Secondly, it is to help companies understand China's business, economic and political environment. Lastly, the report is intended to assist executives in identifying business opportunities in the emerging Chinese market.
Most primary and secondary research was done in China in order to access up-to-date government regulations, market information and industry data. Data was collected from Chinese government publications, Chinese language newspapers and magazines, Chinese chemical industry associations, local governments' chemical industry bureaus, and architectural paint industry publications. Interviews were conducted with Chinese industry experts, university professors, and architectural paint producers in China.
China started developing its architectural paints industry in the early thirties. In the past decade, China has completed expansions and technology upgrades of architectural paints manufacturing facilities in major companies. In recent years, the industry has enjoyed rapid development and strong growth. The total architectural paints output reached 562,000 metric tons in 2000.
The Chinese government made the development of synthetic resin architectural paints a top priority. Acrylic, epoxy, vinyl and polyurethane resin architectural paints will offer the best growth opportunities. The consumption of solvent-based architectural paints will continue to decline. Demand for water-based, powder, high solid, electrodeposition and other high-grade architectural paints will remain strong though the next few decades. Architectural paints consumption in residential and commercial buildings will continue to remain the largest end-use market. Given its vast demand, China represents an immense potential market for architectural paints.
Despite the significant progress made by the architectural paints industry in the last decade, the industry faces many obstacles, which are hindering industry development. Skyrocketing costs and short supply of raw materials have created a situation in which most of the industrial coatings’ producers are unable to operate at full capacity. The overcapacity of low-grade architectural paints has also caused fierce competition for market share and raw materials. The percentage of high-grade architectural paints output is relatively low and cannot satisfy the high demand. Some large producers equipped with advanced, imported technology are unable to provide products of the same quality as their foreign counterparts. The industry lacks standards and sufficient investment in research and development. However, the obstacles will be overcome as the industry gets mature. Through the next century, the industry will continue to consolidate. Producers with superior technology and high quality products will survive in this increasingly competitive market.
This report examines China's macroeconomic trends, investment environment, architectural paints industry structure and capacities, production and demand, end-use market consumption trends, distribution channels and industry participants. Long-term forecasts for synthetic resin-based architectural paints and pigments are
included. Key producers are profiled. Top Chinese architectural paints producers are listed in the producer directory section. Key Chinese trading companies are also included.
China has experienced over two decades of high economic growth, which has been stimulated by the consecutive increases of industrial output, consumer consumption and capital investment. China’s GDP has been growing at 9.8% per annum. National industry output has been advancing at 15% annually and will continue to sustain a strong growth into the next decade. The fast-growing middle class is creating an enormous consumer society. As the fastest-growing economy in the world, the emerging market has attracted the attention of investors and corporations around the world for the last two decades.
To deepen the reform of state-owned enterprises is a long-term task and needs great efforts. The reform of state-owned economy has witnessed rapid changes in both economic and social aspects. The introduction of foreign advanced technology and capitals will continue to be favored by the Chinese government and business community. New ways will be adopted to utilize foreign investment, including mergers, acquisition, and investment funds and securities investment.
China will continue to improve its investment environment in the areas of legal system, intellectual property protection, foreign trade and investment regulation, infrastructure and financial system. China is the second largest foreign investment recipient after the United States in the world today.
Given its vast market, the country provides tremendous opportunities for investment and trade both for the present and future.
