Abstract:
The challenges of managing pain; classification of pain, pain measurement; health plan coverage for common tests, procedures, and treatment including complementary/alternative medicine, conventional drug therapies, opioids; patient consents, patient-provider contracts; provider credentialing; pain rehabilitation programs + anesthesia, orthopedic and rheumatology tests and procedures to manage pain syndromes. Resources and references from the medical literature. Updated annually.
Our ‘single topics’ provide the tools needed for a cost-effective, evidence-based strategy to increase the efficiency and quality of care management. Each is supported by current references from the peer-reviewed medical literature and other authoritative resources.
Pain control has become a problem because of confusion as to who is responsible, a general lack of knowledge about pain, and misconceptions about drug tolerance and addiction.
Dennis S. O’Leary, MD, President JCAHO. In: JAMA
Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical attention, yet chronic pain is one of the afflictions physicians are most loathe to treat. The chronic pain patient is shunned by many physicians because medical therapies are often ineffectual, patients frequently have unrealistic expectations, and physicians can feel powerless to help patients regain a more productive, satifying lifestyle. Paradoxically, despite the apparent futility of medical treatments, chronic pain patients take up enormous amounts of time in the clinic, after hours, and on the telephone.
Carlson, N., Belgrade, M.: The role of rehabilitation in the management of chronic pain. Med J of Allina
