 Horizon BlueCross BlueShield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) is the states largest health insurer, providing coverage to over 2.8 million people. Horizon BCBSNJ has annual revenues of over $5.9 billion and employs 4,600 people. Horizon BCBSNJ began implementing a managed care strategy in 1993. Horizon BCBSNJ began exploring a for-profit option of conversion in December 2001. Horizon BCBSNJ continues to expand its horizons to provide a diverse selection of products and services through its affiliated companies. Horizon BCBSNJ is also focusing on additional service areas, such as southern New Jersey and New York City. Horizon added more than 285,000 new members in 2002 and grew its market share to nearly 37% of New Jerseys insured population.
