Abstract:
BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is a leader in delivering innovative health care products, services and information to 2.9 million members, including 546,000 served on behalf of other Blue plans. BCBSNCs HMO and POS products have earned Excellent Accreditation from the NCQA. BCBSNC announced in July 2003 that it was withdrawing its plan to convert to a for-profit company, citing potential harm to the company, its customers and the value of the Foundation. When Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina abandoned plans to become a for-profit company a in 2003, Robert J. Greczyn, its chief executive, described the new game plan as "business as usual." Enrollment is at an all-time high and projected to increase at a healthy rate as North Carolinas population soars over the next decade. Earnings are through the roof, creating cash the company is using to improve technology and speed up sales and customer service. A new insurance plan that lets customers build customized health coverage -- the Freedom Account -- will start statewide beginning April 1. And thanks to its acquisition in 2001 of a rival insurance company, Blue Cross operates the states largest Medicare health maintenance organization, leaving it well poised to benefit from new opportunities under sweeping Medicare reform passed late last year.
