This study draws from the results of IDC's European Vertical Market Survey, carried out in March/April 2005 in the top 5 Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) among 1,150 companies with more than 20 employees.
The aim of the survey is to understand vertical markets' IT spending directions, solution priorities, investment plans, adoption of new technologies and mobility, outsourcing, the role of IT within the organization, and customer satisfaction.
The focus of the study is familiarity and current/planned adoption of new technologies. Technologies investigated include broadband; grid computing, IP VPN, Linux, network attached storage, open source, optical transmission, peer-to-peer computing, remote access, rich media video streaming, server blades, server consolidation, service-oriented architecture, storage area networks, storage consolidation, technology based on 2.5G or 3G mobile services, videoconferencing, voice over IP, VPN, wireless cards for wireless access in public access locations, wireless LAN, and XML.
Results are given for total Western Europe for the following vertical markets: banking; insurance and other finance; discrete manufacturing; process manufacturing; healthcare services; transport, telecommunications, media, and utilities; retail and wholesale; business services; education; and government.
