This study looks at the manufacturing vertical, which includes discrete and process manufacturing sectors. In 2004 and 2005, this industry was one of the key verticals in terms of IT spending in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), representing approximately 16% of the total IT spending by industries.

"Security has recently seen very strong attention by IT executives and consistently is at the top spot for strategic IT solutions. Within the manufacturing sector, security is still the top priority mentioned in IDC's Continuum2005 survey, and is closely followed by "storage and database" and enterprise resource management solutions," says Kit Yau, senior research manager, IT Services, IDC Asia/Pacific. "As there is increased collaboration with external parties such as business partners, suppliers, and customers, it is critical for manufacturers to assure the transaction and interaction take place within a secure environment."
