Abstract:
Corporate hospitality is not so much an industry in its own right as an activity conducted by organisations to entertain clients and staff through a variety of ways, which touches on several other industries. Corporate hospitality then becomes a measurable revenue stream for this.

These industries include sports organisations, catering organisations, conference and exhibition venues, and entertainment agents, to name the prime beneficiaries of organisations' hospitality budgets. However, there are some organisations for which corporate hospitality forms a prime revenue stream and these include event organisers and agents that specialise in corporate hospitality, building their businesses from organising events themselves, ticketing or catering.

Although corporate hospitality may provide important revenues to the organisations that service this marketing, it is an activity that is almost impossible to quantify. One market measure, the Bellwether Report prepared for the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), includes corporate hospitality in a miscellany of `other' marketing activities, including expenditure on e-commerce, exhibitions, market research, newsletters, promotional material, public relations and sponsorship which, for 2005, comprised 24% of total marketing spending, 1% higher than in 2004. Without a detailed breakdown of budget allocations it is not possible to ascertain how much of the increase was accounted for by a growth in hospitality budgets.

However, it is clear that corporate hospitality is an essential part of the marketing mix. For many event organisers, it is an essential source of revenue — either directly or through contractors — being less likely to be affected by economic shifts, which could depress consumer spending.

For this reason, this report looks at corporate hospitality as a market in its own right and this report shows how the market has grown.

Because the market is primarily centred around events, there is a great deal of overlap with the events industry. Indeed, the industry's only trade association, The Corporate Event Association (CEA), merged in January 2006 with the Incentive Travel and Meetings Association (ITMA) to become Eventia, a new association to represent organisations that provide business solutions through the use of events. This follows a trend that is also becoming evident throughout the conferences and exhibitions market: it, too, is considering its activities as `events'.

In addition, hospitality is broadening to include `experiential' marketing, a new definition that describes activities where organisations have direct contact with clients through a range of activities. These include one-to-one meetings, and exhibitions that enable them to engage directly with the customer, and the customer with the product. This signals a response to increasing media fragmentation and, as corporate hospitality is an established marketing tool, it is likely that this will be included as a major component of this new category.
