Hillenbrand Industries, headquartered in Batesville, Indiana, USA, is a holding company for two diverse, wholly-owned and autonomously managed operating companies which serve the healthcare and funeral services industries. Hill-Rom, the focus of this profile, forms Hillenbrand’s Health Care Group, while Batesville Casket Company provides funeral services in the US. Hillenbrand also owned the Forethought Financial Services business until this was divested in 2004.

Also headquartered in Batesville, Hill-Rom is a leading manufacturer and provider of patient care devices and specialised therapy rental products and services to acute, ambulatory and long-term healthcare facilities and home care patients. Its products include beds, therapy surfaces, stretchers, furniture, communication systems, surgical columns, modular headwalls and devices to treat deep vein thrombosis and respiratory problems. It is also a provider of medical equipment outsourcing and asset management services. The company accounts for 66% of Hillenbrand’s total revenue. Hill-Rom’s key market is North America, which generates the majority of sales and earnings, and its main business area is capital sales, accounting for 63.4% of revenue in 2005, with the remainder coming from rentals.
